TACOMA, Washington — Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most highly-regarded figures in soccer history. But he is also one of the most recognizable athletes in general. His physical abilities are examined by fans of many different sports, as they are considered “alien-like” by many. Standing at over six feet tall, he is still one of the fastest soccer players in the world. He has an outstanding scoring record, and a career filled with iconic and revolutionary moments. However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s charity work also deserves recognition.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Background
Being familiar with the player’s background is pivotal to understanding the motives behind Ronaldo’s charity work. From a young age, he had a troublesome childhood. Once, he even threw a chair at his teacher after she insulted him. He is a proud individual, valuing his hard work and seeking recognition from the world of soccer. That has been the case ever since his childhood, as it is clear he does not take any attack on his character or abilities lightly.

However, that personality trait is not the most critical to understanding Cristiano Ronaldo’s charity work. He has firsthand experience with poverty from growing up in Madeira, Portugal. Ronaldo pursued a career with Sporting Lisbon after dropping out of school. Additionally, his alcoholic father died when he was young. He was recently in an emotional interview with Piers Morgan, saying with tears in his eyes, “[my father]doesn’t see me receiving awards.”

His Soccer Career
He was recruited as a teenager when he played a Sporting Lisbon match against the English team Manchester United. Following that he spent some years in the Premier League, and then nine seasons with Real Madrid in La Liga. Within that period he has won over 30 team trophies and countless individual awards. In that process, he also accumulated tremendous wealth, which he has given to charity on several occasions.

He has an estimated net worth of $450 million from his soccer, modeling and social media careers. Due to his experiences with poverty, it is no wonder that Cristiano Ronaldo’s charity work has existed for years. He has a deep understanding of the living conditions and thus he has donated large portions of his wealth to humanitarian efforts.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Charity Work
Most recently, he has agreed to a pay-cut for the months of March through June, which has cost him about €3.8 million. Furthermore, he has also donated nearly one million Euros to hospitals in Portugal to supply beds, ventilators, fans, and infusion pumps. He has also suggested that his national team squad donates half of their Euro qualification bonuses in support of efforts to help with the virus.

One of his most notable efforts includes selling one of his most important awards to fund a humanitarian effort. The Golden Boot, which is awarded to the top-scorer in Europe at the end of each season, was auctioned and raised more than one million Euros. The funds built multiple schools in Gaza. In 2017, he also did this with an award recognizing the best player of the year. These funds went to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Overall, Cristiano Ronaldo’s charity work continues to be impactful during the pandemic and can serve as inspiration for countless other public figures. His background in poverty seems to have motivated the player to put in all this effort and will undoubtedly inspire further philanthropic efforts.

* It appears from the bibliography that Cristiano Ronaldo also has a rich philanthropic work that he wishes not to be made public. Fortunately, there are people among us who are very special!
