{"id":44261,"date":"2022-06-07T00:02:30","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T21:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lecturesbureau.gr\/1\/?p=44261"},"modified":"2022-06-06T23:50:05","modified_gmt":"2022-06-06T20:50:05","slug":"joseph-interprets-pharaohs-dream-2946","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lecturesbureau.gr\/1\/joseph-interprets-pharaohs-dream-2946\/?lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Joseph interprets Pharaoh&#8217;s dream (GENESIS 41)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"s\"><span class=\"heading\">Pharaoh\u2019s Dream<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse v1\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.1\"><span class=\"label\">1<\/span><span class=\"content\">Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing by the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"content\">Nile.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v2\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.2\"><span class=\"label\">2<\/span><span class=\"content\">And lo, there came up out of the Nile seven [healthy] cows, sleek\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0handsome and fat; and they grazed in the reed grass [in a marshy pasture].\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v3\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.3\"><span class=\"label\">3<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the Nile, ugly and gaunt\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0raw-boned, and stood by the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">fat<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0cows on the bank of the Nile.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v4\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.4\"><span class=\"label\">4<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then the ugly and gaunt\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0raw-boned cows ate up the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh awoke.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v5\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.5\"><span class=\"label\">5<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then he fell asleep and dreamed a second time; and behold, seven ears of grain came up on a single stalk, plump and good.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v6\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.6\"><span class=\"label\">6<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then behold, seven ears [of grain], thin and dried up by the east wind, sprouted after them.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v7\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.7\"><span class=\"label\">7<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then the thin ears swallowed the seven plump and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and it was a dream.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v8\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.8\"><span class=\"label\">8<\/span><span class=\"content\">So when morning came his spirit was troubled\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0disturbed and he sent and called for all the magicians and all the wise men of Egypt. And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them to him.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse v9\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.9\"><span class=\"label\">9<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, \u201cI would mention my faults today.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v10\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.10\"><span class=\"label\">10<\/span><span class=\"content\">[Two years ago] Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and he put me in confinement in the house of the captain of the guard, both me and the chief baker.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v11\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.11\"><span class=\"label\">11<\/span><span class=\"content\">We dreamed a dream on the same night, he and I; each of us dreamed according to [the significance of] the interpretation of his own dream.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v12\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.12\"><span class=\"label\">12<\/span><span class=\"content\">Now there was with us [in the prison] a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted our dreams for us, to each man according to the significance of his own dream.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v13\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.13\"><span class=\"label\">13<\/span><span class=\"content\">And just as he interpreted [the dreams] for us, so it happened; I was restored to my office [as chief cupbearer], and the baker was hanged.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"s\"><span class=\"heading\">Joseph Interprets<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse v14\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.14\"><span class=\"label\">14<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then Pharaoh sent and called for Joseph, and they hurriedly brought him out of the dungeon; and when Joseph shaved himself and changed his clothes [making himself presentable], he came to Pharaoh.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v15\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.15\"><span class=\"label\">15<\/span><span class=\"content\">Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u201cI have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it; and I have heard it said about you that you can understand a dream and interpret it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v16\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.16\"><span class=\"label\">16<\/span><span class=\"content\">Joseph answered Pharaoh, \u201cIt is not in me [to interpret the dream]; God [not I] will give Pharaoh a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"content\">favorable answer [through me].\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v17\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.17\"><span class=\"label\">17<\/span><span class=\"content\">So Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u201cIn my dream, I was standing on the bank of the Nile;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v18\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.18\"><span class=\"label\">18<\/span><span class=\"content\">and seven fat, sleek\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0handsome cows came up out of the river, and they grazed in the reed grass [of a marshy pasture].\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v19\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.19\"><span class=\"label\">19<\/span><span class=\"content\">Lo, seven other cows came up after them, very ugly and gaunt [just skin and bones]; such emaciated animals as I have never seen in all the land of Egypt.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v20\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.20\"><span class=\"label\">20<\/span><span class=\"content\">And the lean and ugly cows ate up the first seven fat cows.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v21\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.21\"><span class=\"label\">21<\/span><span class=\"content\">Yet when they had devoured them, it could not be detected that they had eaten them, because they were still as thin\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0emaciated as before. Then I awoke [but again I fell asleep and dreamed].\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v22\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.22\"><span class=\"label\">22<\/span><span class=\"content\">I saw in my [second] dream, seven ears [of grain], plump and good, growing on a single stalk;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v23\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.23\"><span class=\"label\">23<\/span><span class=\"content\">and lo, seven [other] ears, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind, sprouted after them;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v24\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.24\"><span class=\"label\">24<\/span><span class=\"content\">and the thin ears devoured the seven good ears. Now I told this to the magicians\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0soothsayers, but there was no one who could explain it [to me].\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse v25\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.25\"><span class=\"label\">25<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, \u201cThe [two] dreams are one [and the same and have one interpretation]; God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v26\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.26\"><span class=\"label\">26<\/span><span class=\"content\">The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years; the [two] dreams are one [and the same].\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v27\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.27\"><span class=\"label\">27<\/span><span class=\"content\">The seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years; and also the seven thin ears, dried up\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0scorched by the east wind, they are seven years of famine\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0hunger.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v28\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.28\"><span class=\"label\">28<\/span><span class=\"content\">This is the message just as I have told Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v29\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.29\"><span class=\"label\">29<\/span><span class=\"content\">Listen very carefully: seven years of great abundance will come throughout all the land of Egypt;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v30\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.30\"><span class=\"label\">30<\/span><span class=\"content\">but afterward seven years of famine\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0hunger will come, and [there will be such desperate need that] all the great abundance [of the previous years] will be forgotten in the land of Egypt [as if it never happened], and famine\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0destitution will ravage\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0destroy the land.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v31\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.31\"><span class=\"label\">31<\/span><span class=\"content\">So the great abundance will become forgotten in the land because of that subsequent famine, for it will be very severe.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v32\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.32\"><span class=\"label\">32<\/span><span class=\"content\">That the dream was repeated twice to Pharaoh [and in two different ways] indicates that this matter is fully determined\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0established by God, and God will bring it to pass very quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v33\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.33\"><span class=\"label\">33<\/span><span class=\"content\">So now let Pharaoh [prepare ahead and] look for a man discerning\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0clear-headed and wise, and set him [in charge] over the land of Egypt [as governor under Pharaoh].\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v34\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.34\"><span class=\"label\">34<\/span><span class=\"content\">Let Pharaoh take action to appoint overseers\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0officials over the land, and set aside one-fifth [of the produce] of the [entire] land of Egypt in the seven years of abundance.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v35\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.35\"><span class=\"label\">35<\/span><span class=\"content\">Let them gather [as a tax] all [of the fifth of] the food of these good years that are coming, and store up grain under the direction\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0authority of Pharaoh, and let them guard the food [in fortified granaries] in the cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v36\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.36\"><span class=\"label\">36<\/span><span class=\"content\">That food shall be put [in storage] as a reserve for the land against the seven years of famine\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0hunger which will occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land (people) will not be ravaged during the famine.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse v37\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.37\"><span class=\"label\">37<\/span><span class=\"content\">Now the plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all of his servants.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"s\"><span class=\"heading\">Joseph Is Made a Ruler of Egypt<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse v38\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.38\"><span class=\"label\">38<\/span><span class=\"content\">So Pharaoh said to his servants, \u201cCan we find a man like this [a man equal to Joseph], in whom is the divine spirit [of God]?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v39\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.39\"><span class=\"label\">39<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u201cSince [your] God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0clear-headed and wise as you are.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v40\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.40\"><span class=\"label\">40<\/span><span class=\"content\">You shall have charge over my house, and all my people shall\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"content\">be governed according to your word and pay respect [to you with reverence, submission, and obedience]; only in [matters of] the throne will I be greater than you [in Egypt].\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v41\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.41\"><span class=\"label\">41<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u201cSee, I have set you [in charge] over all the land of Egypt.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v42\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.42\"><span class=\"label\">42<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph\u2019s hand, and dressed him in [official] vestments of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v43\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.43\"><span class=\"label\">43<\/span><span class=\"content\">He had him ride in his second chariot; and runners proclaimed before him, \u201c[Attention,] bow the knee!\u201d And he set him over all the land of Egypt.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v44\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.44\"><span class=\"label\">44<\/span><span class=\"content\">Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u201c<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">Though<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0I am Pharaoh, yet without your permission shall no man raise his hand [to do anything] or set his foot [to go anywhere] in all the land of Egypt [all classes of people shall submit to your authority].\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v45\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.45\"><span class=\"label\">45<\/span><span class=\"content\">Then Pharaoh named Joseph\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"content\">Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On (Heliopolis in Egypt), as his wife. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt [to inspect and govern it].<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse v46\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.46\"><span class=\"label\">46<\/span><span class=\"content\">Now Joseph [had been in Egypt thirteen years and] was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. Joseph departed from the presence of Pharaoh and went through all the land of Egypt [performing his duties].\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v47\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.47\"><span class=\"label\">47<\/span><span class=\"content\">In the seven abundant years the earth produced handfuls [for each seed planted].\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v48\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.48\"><span class=\"label\">48<\/span><span class=\"content\">And Joseph gathered all the [surplus] food of the seven [good] years in the land of Egypt and stored [enormous quantities of] the food in the cities. He stored away in every city the food [collected] from its own surrounding fields.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v49\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.49\"><span class=\"label\">49<\/span><span class=\"content\">Thus Joseph gathered\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0stored up grain in great abundance like the sand of the sea, until he stopped counting it, for it could not be measured.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"s\"><span class=\"heading\">The Sons of Joseph<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse v50\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.50\"><span class=\"label\">50<\/span><span class=\"content\">Now two sons were born to Joseph before the years of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v51\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.51\"><span class=\"label\">51<\/span><span class=\"content\">Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh (causing to forget), for\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">he said,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0\u201cGod has made me forget all my trouble\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0hardship and all [the sorrow of the loss of] my father\u2019s household.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v52\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.52\"><span class=\"label\">52<\/span><span class=\"content\">He named the second [son] Ephraim (fruitfulness), for \u201cGod has caused me to be fruitful\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">and<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0very successful in the land of my suffering.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"p\"><span class=\"verse v53\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.53\"><span class=\"label\">53<\/span><span class=\"content\">When the seven years of plenty came to an end in the land of Egypt,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v54\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.54\"><span class=\"label\">54<\/span><span class=\"content\">the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said [they would]; the famine was in all the [surrounding] lands, but in the land of Egypt there was bread (food).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v55\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.55\"><span class=\"label\">55<\/span><span class=\"content\">So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried out to Pharaoh for food; and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, \u201cGo to Joseph; do whatever he says to you.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v56\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.56\"><span class=\"label\">56<\/span><span class=\"content\">When the famine was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"it\"><span class=\"content\">spread<\/span><\/span><span class=\"content\">\u00a0over all the land, Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold [surplus grain] to the Egyptians; and the famine grew [extremely] severe in the land of Egypt.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"verse v57\" data-usfm=\"GEN.41.57\"><span class=\"label\">57<\/span><span class=\"content\">And [the people of] all countries came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the [known] earth.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em><strong>Source: Bible &#8211;
