So, what happens in the world is that everybody is fighting somebody. One man is lesser than another man. There is no love, there is no consideration, there is no thought. Each man wants to become somebody. A member of parliament wants to become the leader of the parliament, to become the prime minister, and so on and on and on. There is perpetual fight\u00ading, and our society is one constant struggle of one man against another, and this struggle is called the ambition to be something. Old people encourage you to do that. Yo u must be ambitious, you must be something, you must marry a rich man or a rich woman, you must have the right kind of friends. So, the older generation, those who are frightened, those who are ugly in their hearts, try to make you like them, and you also want to be like them because you see the glam\u00adour of it all. When the governor comes, everybody bows … That is why it is very important that you should find the right vocation. You know what “vocation” means? Some\u00adthing which you will love to do, which is natural.<\/p>\n
After all, that is the function of education, of a school of this kind, to help you grow independently so that you are not ambitious but can find your true vocation. The ambitious man has never found his true vocation … That is not ambition, to do something marvelously, com\u00adpletely, truly according to what you think; that is not ambition; in that there is no fear.<\/p>\n
We are always comparing ourselves with somebody else. If I am dull, I want to be more clever. If I am shallow, I want to be deep. If I am ignorant, I want to be more clever, more knowledgeable. I am always comparing myself, measuring myself against others-a better car, better food, a better home, a better way of thinking. Comparison breeds conflict. And do you understand through comparison? When you compare two pictures, two pieces of music, two sunsets, when you compare that tree with another tree, do you un\u00adderstand either? Or do you understand something only when there is no comparison at all? So, is it possible to live without comparison of any kind, never translating yourself in terms of comparison with an\u00adother or with some idea or with some hero or with some example? Because when you are comparing, when you are measuring yourself with ‘what should be’ or ‘what has been’,<\/p>\n
The Key to Freedom you are not seeing what is. Please listen to this. It is very simple, and therefore probably you, being clever, cunning, will miss it. We are asking whether it is possible to live in this world without any comparison at all. Don’t say no. Yo u have never done it. Yo u won’t say, “I cannot do it; it is im\u00adpossible because all my conditioning is to compare.” In a schoolroom a boy is compared with another, and the teacher says, “You are not as clever as the other.” The teacher de\u00adstroys B when he is comparing B with A. That process goes on through life.<\/p>\n
