My mother bore me in the southern wild,<\/p>\n
And I am black, but O! my soul is white;<\/p>\n
White as an angel is the English child:<\/p>\n
But I am black as if bereav’d of light.<\/p>\n

My mother taught me underneath a tree<\/p>\n
And sitting down before the heat of day,<\/p>\n
She took me on her lap and kissed me,<\/p>\n
And pointing to the east began to say.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Look on the rising sun: there God does live<\/p>\n
And gives his light, and gives his heat away.<\/p>\n
And flowers and trees and beasts and men receive<\/p>\n
Comfort in morning joy in the noonday.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
And we are put on earth a little space,<\/p>\n
That we may learn to bear the beams of love,<\/p>\n
And these black bodies and this sun-burnt face<\/p>\n
Is but a cloud, and like a shady grove.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
For when our souls have learn’d the heat to bear<\/p>\n
The cloud will vanish we shall hear his voice.<\/p>\n
Saying: come out from the grove my love & care,<\/p>\n
And round my golden tent like lambs rejoice.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Thus did my mother say and kissed me,<\/p>\n
And thus I say to little English boy.<\/p>\n
When I from black and he from white cloud free,<\/p>\n
And round the tent of God like lambs we joy:<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Ill shade him from the heat till he can bear,<\/p>\n
To lean in joy upon our fathers knee.<\/p>\n
And then I’ll stand and stroke his silver hair,<\/p>\n
And be like him and he will then love me.<\/p>\n
