Occasionally, one hears tales of parents whose great love for each other consumes all the love available<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:20:25:0:0\" data-endposition=\"9:20:37:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">in the household, leaving only love-cinders for the children. But this zero-sum<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:20:37:0:0\" data-endposition=\"9:20:50:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">economic model of love makes little sense. The opposite seems true: the more<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:20:50:0:0\" data-endposition=\"9:20:64:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">one loves, the more that one responds to children, to everyone, in a loving<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:20:64:0:0\" data-endposition=\"9:21:0:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:22:0:0:0\" data-endposition=\"9:22:9:4:0\" data-complex=\"0\">Arthur\u2019s love-bereft childhood had serious implications for his future. Chil<\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:22:9:4:0\" data-endposition=\"9:22:23:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">dren deprived of a maternal love bond fail to develop the basic trust necessary<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:22:23:0:0\" data-endposition=\"9:22:38:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">to love themselves, to believe that others will love them, or to love being alive.<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:22:38:0:0\" data-endposition=\"9:22:49:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">In adulthood they become estranged, withdraw into themselves, and often live<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:22:49:0:0\" data-endposition=\"9:22:59:4:0\" data-complex=\"0\">in an adversarial relationship with others. Such was the psychological land-<span data-hidespace=\"1\" data-backspace=\"1\" data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"9:22:59:4:0\" data-endposition=\"9:23:0:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">scape that would ultimately inform Arthur\u2019s worldview.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Love between parents begets love for the children.
