The Lion lost his wife, one day;
\nAnd everybody made his way
\nTo bring the prince that consolation
\nWhich makes us feel our desolation.
\nThe King announced the funeral
\nOn such a day, to one and all.
\nThey regulate the obsequy,
\nAnd marshal the vast company:
\nAs you may guess, each one was there;
\nThe prince\u2032s groanings filled the air;
\nAnd the den shook, above, below\u2014
\nLions have got great lungs, you know.
\nAs the King does, all the others do;
\nSo the best courtiers blubbered too.<\/p>\n
Let me define a court: a place
\nSad\u2014gay; where every changeful face,
\nCareless of joy, is ready still
\nTo change again at the King\u2032s will;
\nAnd if some cannot change, they try
\nTo watch the change in the King\u2032s eye:
\nChameleons, apes, in every feature;
\nPlastic and pliant in their nature.
\nOne soul by turns fills many bodies:
\nThese knaves are soulless, which more odd is.<\/p>\n
But to return. The Stag alone
\nUttered no single sigh or groan.
\nIt could not well be otherwise;
\nThis death avenged old injuries.
\nThe Queen had cruel, mischief done;
\nStrangled his wife, and slain his son:
\nTherefore he shed no single tear.
\nA flatterer noticed, hovering near;
\nMoreover, the spy saw him smile.
\nThe anger of a King, meanwhile
\n(I may observe, with Solomon,
\nThe wisest man beneath the sun),
\nIs terrible; but to our friend
\nNo book could much instruction lend.
\n“Base creature of the woods!” with scorn
\nThe Lion cried, “you do not mourn!
\nWhat should prevent our sacred claws
\nTeaching you friendship\u2032s holy laws?
\nCome, Wolves, avenge that Queen of mine:
\nOffer this victim on her shrine!”
\nThe Stag replied, “The time for grief
\nIs passed; tears now are useless, Chief.
\nYour wife, whose features well I know,
\nAppeared to me an hour ago,
\nHalf hid in flowers. \u2032My friend,\u2032 she said,
\n\u2032For me your tears are vainly shed.
\nWeep not: in the Elysian fields
\nI\u2032ve every pleasure that life yields,
\nConversing with my holy friends;
\nBut for a time the King descends
\nTo a despair that charms me so.\u2032”
\nScarce had he spoken thus, when, lo!
\n“A miracle!” the courtiers cry.
\nThe Stags rewarded, instantly;
\nAnd safely, without punishment,
\nBack to his native woods is sent.<\/p>\n
