The<\/span>\u00a0term<\/span>\u00a0Physical<\/span>\u00a0Intelligence<\/span>\u00a0was<\/span>\u00a0first<\/span>\u00a0used<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0Frames<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0Mind:<\/span>\u00a0The<\/span>\u00a0Theory<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Multiple<\/span>\u00a0Intelligences<\/span>\u00a0by<\/span>\u00a0Howard<\/span>\u00a0Gardner<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a01983<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0His<\/span>\u00a0work<\/span>\u00a0established<\/span>\u00a0our<\/span>\u00a0ini-<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>tial understanding of different intelligences and learning styles. Gardner pro-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>posed that \u2018bodily-kinaesthetic\u2019 intelligence (intelligence derived through phys-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ical, practical learning \u2013 demonstrated, for example, by those who excel in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>sport<\/span>\u00a0or<\/span>\u00a0dance)<\/span>\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0equally<\/span>\u00a0valid<\/span>\u00a0alongside<\/span>\u00a0other<\/span>\u00a0types<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0intelligence.*<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Gardner<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>also identified that \u2018intrapersonal\u2019 intelligence (understanding of self) and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2018interpersonal\u2019 intelligence (understanding of others) are as important as the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>type of intelligence typically measured by IQ.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Then, in 1990, the concept of \u2018emotional intelligence\u2019 (EQ or EI) was formu-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>lated by two researchers, Peter Salovey and John Mayer, and in 1995 Daniel\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Goleman<\/span>\u00a0published<\/span>\u00a0his<\/span>\u00a0seminal<\/span>\u00a0book<\/span>\u00a0Emotional<\/span>\u00a0Intelligence.<\/span>\u00a0Emotional<\/span>\u00a0intel-<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ligence is the capacity to be aware of, control and express emotion, and to\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

handle interpersonal relationships with good judgement and empathy in order\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to achieve personal and professional success for you and others.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Being emotionally intelligent requires a high degree of Physical Intelligence\u00a0<\/span><\/span>because we experience emotions largely in the body as physiological changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Emotions are actually strands of neuropeptides \u2013 chemicals released into the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>bloodstream that arrive at receptor cells and activate circuits of response that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>lead to behaviour; sadness, elation, frustration and pride all have a different\u00a0<\/span><\/span>chemistry<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0distinct<\/span>\u00a0feeling<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0them.<\/span>\u00a0For<\/span>\u00a0example,<\/span>\u00a0pride<\/span>\u00a0tends<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0move<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>slowly outwards and upwards from the chest, while frustration often moves\u00a0<\/span><\/span>quickly inwards and down in a clenching action, forming isolated knots of ten-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>sion.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Being physically intelligent is more than this, however. The internal state of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the body motivates us to walk on the shady side of the street on a hot sum-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>mer\u2019s day, to continue to read a book we are enjoying, to reduce social activity\u00a0<\/span><\/span>when feeling unwell, to avoid contact with someone who isn\u2019t smiling, to gon<\/span><\/span>into business with someone we trust, and so on. The viscera (the organs in the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>body), limbs and digits (legs and arms, feet and hands, fingers and toes),\u00a0<\/span><\/span>senses (hearing, sight, taste, smell and touch) and musculoskeletal system\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(posture and orientation) are in continuous two-way communication with the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>insular cortex in the brain, a deep, central part of the brain that connects\u00a0<\/span><\/span>physiological experiences with thoughts and emotions and vice versa.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Two decades of neuroscientific research shows us, for example, that we are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>45 per cent more likely to have a high-quality, innovative idea when we are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>walking as opposed to when seated; that an open and expansive body posture\u00a0<\/span><\/span>improves confidence and risk tolerance; and that paced breathing technique in-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>creases cognitive function by 62 per cent. Furthermore, there are over 100\u00a0<\/span><\/span>studies that show that physical exercise improves intelligence, including IQ\u00a0<\/span><\/span>levels and task efficiency.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This evidence increasingly points to the fact that our Physical <\/span><\/div>\n

Intelligence\u00a0<\/span><\/span>not<\/span>\u00a0only<\/span>\u00a0sits<\/span>\u00a0alongside,<\/span>\u00a0but<\/span>\u00a0underpins<\/span>\u00a0our<\/span>\u00a0cognitive<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0emotional<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

performance. Becoming more physically intelligent will help us create busi-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>nesses and societies where people take responsibility for themselves, are more\u00a0<\/span><\/span>informed and thoughtful about how to use their capacity, and are equipped\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with techniques that foster harmony and help them and their organisations\u00a0<\/span><\/span>achieve and sustain peak performance.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
