I failed in everything.<\/div>\n
Since I had no aims, maybe everything was indeed nothing.<\/div>\n
What I was taught,<\/div>\n
I climbed out of that,\u00a0down from the window at the back of the house.<\/div>\n
I went to the countryside with grand plans,<\/div>\n
But all I found there was grass and trees,<\/div>\n
And when there were people, they were just like the others.<\/div>\n
I step back from the window and sit in a chair. What should I think about now?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

What do I know of what I shall be, I who do not know what I am?<\/div>\n
Be what I think I am? But I think of so many things!<\/div>\n
And there are so many who think to be the same thing- there can\u2019t be that many!<\/div>\n
Genius? At this moment<\/div>\n
A hundred thousand minds dream themselves geniuses like I do,<\/div>\n
And history will not register, who knows? not even one,<\/div>\n
Nor will it remain but manure from so many future conquests.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\n
No, I do not believe in myself.<\/div>\n
In every mental asylum there are mad deranged people with so many certainties!<\/div>\n
I, who do not have any certainties, am more or less right?<\/div>\n
No, not even in myself\u2026<\/div>\n
In how many garrets and non-garrets of the world<\/div>\n
Are not there geniuses dreaming unto themselves?<\/div>\n
How many aspirations high and noble and lucid-<\/div>\n
– yes, truly high, noble and lucid-<\/div>\n
And, who knows, maybe accomplishable,<\/div>\n
Will never see the light of the real sun, nor be heard by human ears?<\/div>\n

The world is for those born to conquer it<\/div>\n
And not for those who dream they can conquer it, even though they may be right.<\/div>\n
I have dreamt more than Napoleon accomplished;<\/div>\n
I have clasped to my hypothetical breast more humanity than Christ;<\/div>\n
I contrived philosophies in secret that no Kant ever wrote.<\/div>\n
But I am, and maybe I shall always be, the one in the garret,<\/div>\n
Even if I don\u2019t live in one;<\/div>\n
I shall always be\u00a0the one who was not born for that<\/em>;<\/div>\n
I shall always be only\u00a0the one who had (good) qualities<\/em>;<\/div>\n
I shall always be the one who waited for the door to be opened by a doorless wall,<\/div>\n
And sang the song of the Infinite in a chicken-house,<\/div>\n
And heard the voice of God inside a plugged well.<\/div>\n

Believe in myself? No, not in anything.<\/div>\n
May Nature pour over my ardent head<\/div>\n
Its sun; its rain, the wind that finds my hair.<\/div>\n
And the rest that may come if it comes, or if it has to come, or if it has not.<\/div>\n
Cardiac slaves to the stars,<\/div>\n
We conquer the world even before we rise from bed;<\/div>\n
But we wake up and it is opaque,<\/div>\n
We get up and it is alien,<\/div>\n
We go out and it is the whole Earth,<\/div>\n
Plus the Solar System and the Milky Way and the Indefinite.<\/div>\n
