Half past twelve. The time has quickly passed<\/div>\n
since nine o’clock when I first turned up the lamp<\/div>\n
and sat down here. I’ve been sitting without reading,<\/div>\n
without speaking. With whom should I speak,<\/div>\n
so utterly alone within this house?<\/div>\n
The apparition of my youthful body,<\/div>\n
since nine o’clock when I first turned up the lamp,<\/div>\n
has come and found me and reminded me<\/div>\n
of shuttered perfumed rooms<\/div>\n
and of pleasure spent\u2014what wanton pleasure!<\/div>\n
And it also brought before my eyes<\/div>\n
streets made unrecognizable by time,<\/div>\n
bustling city centres that are no more<\/div>\n
and theatres and caf\u00e9s that existed long ago.<\/div>\n
The apparition of my youthful body<\/div>\n
came and also brought me cause for pain:<\/div>\n
deaths in the family; separations;<\/div>\n
the feelings of my loved ones, the feelings of<\/div>\n
those long dead which I so little valued.<\/div>\n
