Still, there was one thing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in those early days that was really irksome: my habit of thinking like a free man.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>For instance, I would suddenly be seized with a\u00a0desire<\/span>\u00a0to go down to the beach\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for a swim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And merely to have imagined the sound of ripples at my feet, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>smooth feel of the water on my body as I struck out, and the wonderful sensa-\u00a0<\/span><\/span>tion of relief it gave brought home still more cruelly the narrowness of my cell.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, that phase lasted a few months only. Afterward, I had prisoner\u2019s thoughts.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I waited for the daily walk in the courtyard or a visit from my lawyer.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>rest of the time, I managed quite well, really. I\u2019ve often thought that had I been\u00a0<\/span><\/span>compelled to live in the trunk of a dead tree, with nothing to do but gaze up at\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the patch of sky just overhead, I\u2019d have got used to it by degrees.<\/span><\/div>\n

I\u2019d have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>learned to watch for the passing of birds or drifting clouds, as I had come to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>watch for my lawyer\u2019s odd neckties, or, in another world, to wait patiently till\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Well, here, anyhow, I wasn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><\/span>penned in a hollow tree trunk. <\/span><\/div>\n
There were others in the world worse off than I.<\/span><\/div>\n

I\u00a0<\/span><\/span>remembered it had been one of Mother\u2019s pet ideas\u2014she was always voicing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>it\u2014that in the long run one gets used to anything.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
