CAVAFY)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When they saw that Patroclus was slain,<\/p>\n<p>who had been so stalwart, and strong, and young,<\/p>\n<p>the horses of Achilles started to weep;<\/p>\n<p>their immortal nature was indignant<\/p>\n<p>at the sight of this work of death.<\/p>\n<p>They would shake their heads and toss their manes,<\/p>\n<p>stamp the ground with their feet, and mourn<\/p>\n<p>Patroclus who they realized was lifeless\u2013\u2013 undone\u2013\u2013<\/p>\n<p>worthless flesh now\u2013\u2013his spirit lost\u2013\u2013<\/p>\n<p>defenseless\u2013\u2013without breath\u2013\u2013<\/p>\n<p>returned from life to the the great Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Zeus saw the tears of the immortal horses<\/p>\n<p>and grew sad. &#8220;At the wedding of Peleus,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>he said, &#8220;I should not have acted so thoughtlessly;<\/p>\n<p>it would have been better my hapless horses<\/p>\n<p>if we had not given you! What are you doing down there,<\/p>\n<p>among woebegone humanity, the plaything of fate?<\/p>\n<p>You for whom neither death nor old age lie in wait,<\/p>\n<p>you are harassed by transitory calamities.<\/p>\n<p>Men have implicated you in their troubles.&#8221;\u2013\u2013Yet the two<\/p>\n<p>noble animals went on shedding their tears<\/p>\n<p>for the never-ending calamity of death.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>C.P.
