Literature (like daily life) is full of stories about people who treat others<\/span>intolerably, as if they were their children. Husbands, wives, friends, bosses,<\/span>neighbors, and government leaders blur the lines of their roles, believing they<\/span>have the right to \u2018adopt\u2019 others as they would a child. Naturally, this almost al-<\/span>ways leads to the \u2018adoptee\u2019 avoiding them at all costs.<\/span>In<\/span>\u00a0his<\/span>\u00a0book,<\/span>\u00a0Bringing<\/span>\u00a0Up<\/span>\u00a0Parents,<\/span>\u00a0Alex<\/span>\u00a0J.<\/span>\u00a0Packer,<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0specialist<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0field<\/span>\u00a0of<\/span><\/span>education, suggests an exercise that seems tailor-made to demonstrate this<\/span>situation. We\u2019ve adapted it here for our readers.<\/span>Imagine that some friends invite you over for dinner. They\u2019re a married<\/span>couple and instead of behaving as you\u2019d expect, they treat you and your partner<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

as though you were their children.<\/span>The hostess\u2019s name is Susana. She opens the door and the first thing she<\/span>says is, \u201cListen, we\u2019ve been sitting here waiting for you. You were supposed to<\/span>arrive at 9:00 and now it\u2019s 9:30. Don\u2019t you think you should have let us know<\/span>you were going to be late?\u201d<\/span>\u201cYes \u2026 we were running behind schedule,\u201d you and your partner say as an<\/span>apology.<\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s fine,\u201d Susana says, \u201cbut don\u2019t let it happen again.\u201d<\/span>When you follow her into the dining room, she goes up to your partner as<\/span>though to confess something and whispers in her ear, \u201cDon\u2019t you think that<\/span>blouse shows too much cleavage for someone your age? I\u2019m just telling you<\/span>because people talk. Who knows what they\u2019ll say if they see you in it \u2014 \u201d<\/span>\u201cI \u2026 uh \u2026 I thought that \u2014 \u201d<\/span>\u201cAll right,\u201d Susana\u2019s husband\u00a0Mario<\/span>\u00a0cuts in. \u201cThe food\u2019s almost ready. Go<\/span>easy on the starters or you\u2019ll spoil your appetite and won\u2019t eat any meat.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

You feel yourself choke on the last piece of salami as Susana takes charge<\/span>again. She rubs her hands together as though enjoying the moment and says,<\/span>\u201cTell us something about yourselves.\u201d<\/span>The two of you look at each other in shock and then, to keep up appear-<\/span>ances, you say, \u201cWell \u2026 we\u2019re thinking about taking a trip to Prague \u2014 \u201d<\/span>\u201cTo Prague!? Are you crazy?\u201d Susana says. \u201cDo you have any idea how<\/span>cold it is at this time of year? And what about the Russian Mafia?\u201d<\/span>\u201cThat\u2019s right,\u201d\u00a0Mario<\/span>\u00a0says, backing her up, though he\u2019s not entirely con-<\/span>vinced. \u201cBesides, considering the way things are going in the country and the<\/span>fact that, let\u2019s be honest, you don\u2019t earn all that much, don\u2019t you think it would<\/span>be better to put the money into a savings account? Then it\u2019ll be there in case of<\/span>emergency. That\u2019s my two cents. But you can do whatever you want. After all,<\/span>you\u2019re the ones who are going to make things difficult for yourselves.\u201d<\/span>After a night like that, you and your partner would probably think twice be-<\/span>fore going over to\u00a0Mario<\/span>\u2019s and Susana\u2019s house again, wouldn\u2019t you say?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

And yet there\u2019s no need to remind ourselves how often parents treat their<\/span>children this way, and what\u2019s more, hope they\u2019ll appreciate it, like it, and thank <\/span>them for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
