The nun Chiyono studied for years,

\nOne night, she was carrying an old pail filled with water.
\nAs she was walking along,
\nshe was watching the full moon
\nreflected in the pail of water.
\nSuddenly, the bamboo strips
\nthat held the pail together broke,
\nand the pail fell apart.
\nThe water rushed out;
\nthe moon\u2019s reflection disappeared
\n\u2014and Chiyono became enlightened.
\nShe wrote this verse:<\/p>\n
This way and that way
\nI tried to keep the pail together,
\nhoping the weak bamboo would never break.<\/p>\n
Suddenly the bottom fell out.
\nNo more water; no more moon in the water
\n\u2014emptiness in my hand.<\/p>\n
Go with emptiness in your hand, because that\u2019s all… that\u2019s all I can offer to you, and nothing is
\ngreater than that.<\/p>\n
This is my gift: go with emptiness in your hand.<\/p>\n
If you can carry emptiness in your hand, then everything becomes possible.<\/p>\n
Don\u2019t carry possessions, don\u2019t carry knowledge, don\u2019t carry anything that fills the pot and becomes the water, because then you will be seeing only the reflection. In wealth, in possessions, in houses, in cars, in prestige, you will see only the reflection of the full moon.<\/p>\n
And the full moon is there waiting for you.<\/p>\n
Let the bottom drop! Don\u2019t try this way and that way to protect the old pail.<\/p>\n
It is not worth it.<\/p>\n
Don\u2019t protect yourself, it is not worth it.<\/p>\n
Let the pail break down, let the water flow, let the moon in the water disappear, because only then will you be able to raise your eyes towards the real moon.<\/p>\n
It is always there in the sky \u2013 but emptiness in the hand is needed.<\/p>\n
Remain more and more empty, think yourself more and more empty, behave more and more as if you are empty.<\/p>\n
By and by, by and by, you will have the taste of it. And once the taste comes, it is so beautiful.<\/p>\n
Once you know the taste of emptiness, you have known the very meaning of life.<\/p>\n
Carry emptiness, drop the pail of water which is your ego, your mind and your thoughts, and remember:<\/p>\n
