No pomp, no lictor clears the way
\n‘Mid rabble-routs of troublous feelings,
\nNor quells the cares that sport and play
\nRound gilded ceilings.<\/p>\n
More happy he whose modest board
\nHis father’s well-worn silver brightens;
\nNo fear, nor lust for sordid hoard,
\nHis light sleep frightens.<\/p>\n
Why bend our bows of little span?
\nWhy change our homes for regions under
\nAnother sun? What exiled man
\nFrom self can sunder?<\/p>\n
Care climbs the bark, and trims the sail,
\nCurst fiend! nor troops of horse can ‘scape her,
\nMore swift than stag, more swift than gale
\nThat drives the vapour.<\/p>\n
Blest in the present, look not forth
\nOn ills beyond, but soothe each bitter
\nWith slow, calm smile. No suns on earth

Achilles’ light was quench’d at noon;
