The next point is that everybody has his own path. There are a thousand paths to discovering yourself, to becoming. Every one of you will find your own way. Don’t let anybody impose theirs on you. There’s a wonderful book called Teachings According to Don Juan written by an anthropologist named Castaneda. It’s all about the Yaqui Indians whom he studied. In it there is a man called Don Juan, who says,each path is only one of a million paths. Therefore, you must always keep in mind that a path is only a path. If you feel that you must now follow it, you need not stay with it under any circumstances. Any path is only a path. There is no affront to yourself or others in dropping it if that is what your heart tells you to do.<\/p>\n

But your decision to keep on the path or to leave it must be free of fear and ambition.I warn you: look at path closely and deliberately. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself and yourself alone one question. It is this: Does this path have a heart? All paths are the same. They lead nowhere. They are paths going through the brush or into the brush or under the brush. Does this path have a heart is the only question. If it does, then the path is good. If it doesn’t, it is of no use.<\/p>\n

You’ve got to be real. Don’t be a phony. Come on as yourself. The hardest thing in the world is to be something you’re not. As you get closer and closer and closer to what you are, be that, and come on all the time that way. You ‘ll find it’s an easy way to live. The easiest thing to be in the world is you. The most difficult thing to be is what other people want you to be. Don’t let them put you in that position. Find “you” who you are, come on as you are. Then you can live simply.<\/p>\n

You can use all of this energy that it takes to “hold back spooks,” as Richard Alpert calls it. You won’t have any spooks to hold back any more. You won’t be playing games any more. Just clear them all away and say, “Here’s me. Take me for what I am with all my frailties, all my stupidity, and so on. And if you can’t, leave me alone.”<\/p>\n
