And all the young men<br \/>\nhad followed him there to hear him.<br \/>\nThis makes sophist Alexander<br \/>\nwrite Herodis a letter<br \/>\nbegging him to send the Greeks back.<br \/>\nAnd the tactful Herodis answers at once:<br \/>\n\u201cAlong with the Greeks, I\u2019m coming too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How many young men now in Alexandria,<br \/>\nin Antioch or in Beirut<br \/>\n(being trained by Hellenism as its future orators),<br \/>\nmeeting at their choice banquets<br \/>\nwhere the talk is sometimes about fine sophistry,<br \/>\nsometimes about their exquisite love affairs,<br \/>\nare suddenly distracted and fall silent.<br \/>\nTheir glasses untouched in front of them,<br \/>\nthey think about Herodis\u2019 good fortune\u2014<br \/>\nwhat other sophist has been given this kind of honor?<br \/>\nWhatever his wish, whatever he does,<br \/>\nthe Greeks (the Greeks!) follow him,<br \/>\nnot to criticize or debate,<br \/>\nnot even to choose any longer,<br \/>\nonly to follow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>C.P.
