{"id":19923,"date":"2016-11-22T00:02:20","date_gmt":"2016-11-21T22:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lecturesbureau.gr\/1\/?p=19923&#038;lang=en"},"modified":"2017-12-12T18:27:17","modified_gmt":"2017-12-12T16:27:17","slug":"unfaithfulness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lecturesbureau.gr\/1\/unfaithfulness\/?lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Unfaithfulness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cSo although we approve of many things in Homer, this we will<br \/>\nnot approve of&#8230; nor will we approve of Aeschylus when he<br \/>\nmakes Thetis say that Apollo sang at her wedding in<br \/>\ncelebration of her child:<\/p>\n<p>that he would not know sickness, would live long,<br \/>\nand that every blessing would be his;<br \/>\nand he sang such praises that he rejoiced my heart.<br \/>\nAnd I had hopes that the divine lips of Apollo,<br \/>\nfluent with the art of prophecy, would not prove false.<br \/>\nBut he who proclaimed these things&#8230;<br \/>\nhe it is<br \/>\nwho killed my son&#8230;\u201d<br \/>\nPlato, Republic, II. 383<\/p>\n<p>At the marriage of Thetis and Peleus<br \/>\nApollo stood up during the sumptuous wedding feast<br \/>\nand blessed the bridal pair<br \/>\nfor the son who would come from their union.<br \/>\n\u201cSickness will never visit him,\u201d he said,<br \/>\n\u201cand his life will be a long one.\u201d<br \/>\nThis pleased Thetis immensely:<br \/>\nthe words of Apollo, expert in prophecies,<br \/>\nseemed to guarantee the security of her child.<br \/>\nAnd when Achilles grew up<br \/>\nand his beauty was the boast of Thessaly,<br \/>\nThetis remembered the god\u2019s words.<br \/>\nBut one day elders arrived with the news<br \/>\nthat Achilles had been killed at Troy.<br \/>\nThetis tore her purple robes,<br \/>\npulled off her rings, her bracelets,<br \/>\nand flung them to the ground.<br \/>\nAnd in her grief, recalling that wedding scene,<br \/>\nshe asked what the wise Apollo was up to,<br \/>\nwhere was this poet who holds forth<br \/>\nso eloquently at banquets, where was this prophet<br \/>\nwhen they killed her son in his prime.<br \/>\nAnd the elders answered that Apollo himself<br \/>\nhad gone down to Troy<br \/>\nand together with the Trojans had killed her son.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>C.P.
