The Hare was once boasting of his speed before the other\u00a0animals. “I have never yet been beaten,” said he, “when I put
\nforth my full speed. I challenge any one here to race with me.”<\/p>\n
The Tortoise said quietly, “I accept your challenge.”<\/p>\n
“That is a good joke,” said the Hare; “I could dance round you
\nall the way.”<\/p>\n
“Keep your boasting till you’ve beaten,” answered the\u00a0Tortoise. “Shall we race?”<\/p>\n
So a course was fixed and a start was made. The Hare darted\u00a0almost out of sight at once, but soon stopped and, to show his
\ncontempt for the Tortoise, lay down to have a nap. The Tortoise\u00a0plodded on and plodded on, and when the Hare awoke from his nap,
\nhe saw the Tortoise just near the winning-post and could not run\u00a0up in time to save the race.<\/p>\n

Then said the Tortoise:
\n“Plodding wins the race.”<\/p>\n
