Detested by both men and gods,
\nlike nobles who have bitterly decayed,
\nthe Verlaines wither; wealth remains
\nto them, of rich and silvery .
\nWith ‘Les Chatiments’ the Hugos are intoxicated
\nby their terrible Olympian revenge.
\nBut I shall write a sorrowful
\nballade to the forgotten poets.<\/p>\n
Though the Poes have lived in misery,
\nand though the Baudelaires have suffered living deaths,
\nthey ve all been granted Immortality.
\nYet no-one now remembers,
\nand the deepest darkness has completely buried,
\nevery poetaster who produced limp poetry.
\nBut I make as an offering this reverent
\nballade to the forgotten poets.<\/p>\n
The world’s disdain is heaped on them,
\nbut they pass by, unyielding, pallid,
\nsacrifices to the tragic fraud that
\nout there somewhere Glory waits for them,
\nthat wise and merry virgin.
\nBut knowing that they re all due for oblivion,
\nI weep nostalgically this sorrowful
\nballade to the forgotten poets.<\/p>\n
And off in some far future epoch:
\n‘What forgotten poet’ I should like it to be asked
\n‘has written such a beggarly
\nballade to the forgotten poets?’<\/p>\n
