Oxfam: The wealth of half the planet <\/span><\/span>belongs to<\/span><\/span><\/span> the 62 richest people in the world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The wealth of 62 <\/span><\/span>has <\/span><\/span><\/span>increased by 44% since 2010 <\/span><\/span>as <\/span><\/span><\/span>the organization <\/span><\/span>mentions<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The 62 richest people in the world today have such wealth as half the world’s population – about 3.5 billion <\/span><\/span>people<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong> –<\/strong> and while <\/span><\/span>they are<\/span><\/span><\/span> increasing their wealth, the poor <\/span><\/span>are becoming <\/span><\/span><\/span> poorer according to the <\/span><\/span>report of MKO <\/span><\/span><\/span>Oxfam.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to<\/span><\/span><\/span> the report, the wealth of the 62 richest people in the world has risen by 44% since 2010, while the wealth of the poorest 3.5 billion people has decreased by 41%.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Almost half the super-rich are from the United States, 17 from Europe, and the rest from countries including China, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and Saudi Arabia.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“We cannot continue to allow hundreds of million people to starve when the resources <\/span><\/span>which<\/span><\/span><\/span> could be used to help <\/span><\/span>are <\/span><\/span><\/span>absorbed by <\/span><\/span>those who are<\/span><\/span><\/span> at the top,” claimed the director of Oxfam International, Winnie Bianima.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is estimated that approximately $ 7.6 trillion of personal wealth are <\/span><\/span>in <\/span><\/span><\/span>offshore tax havens and if <\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span><\/span> tax <\/span><\/span>was paid <\/span><\/span><\/span>on <\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span><\/span> income produced <\/span><\/span>by <\/span><\/span><\/span>this wealth, an amount of $ 190 billion would be available to governments on an annual basis, says <\/span><\/span>Gabriel<\/span><\/span><\/span> Zackman<\/span><\/span><\/span>, lecturer at the University of <\/span><\/span>California<\/span><\/span><\/span> Berkeley.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Referring to the <\/span><\/span>professor’s project<\/span><\/span><\/span>, Oxfam said that 30% of all financial wealth of Africa is in offshore accounts, bringing losses of $ 14 billion <\/span><\/span>per<\/span><\/span><\/span> year in lost \u201c<\/span><\/span>tax-collections<\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This money <\/span><\/span>would<\/span><\/span><\/span> suffice for the health <\/span><\/span>and the<\/span><\/span><\/span> care <\/span><\/span>of<\/span><\/span><\/span> four million children <\/span><\/span>per<\/span><\/span><\/span> year, and to recruit enough teachers to ensure that every African child can go to school, <\/span><\/span>as mentioned in the<\/span><\/span><\/span> report of the organization.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Multinational corporations and the wealthy elite play with different <\/span><\/span>terms the game<\/span><\/span><\/span>, refusing to pay taxes that society needs to function. The fact that 188 of the 201 top companies have a presence in at least one tax haven shows that the time has come to act,” said Bianima.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen by 650 million since 1981, <\/span><\/span>despite the fact that<\/span><\/span><\/span> the population of the world <\/span><\/span>has increased<\/span><\/span><\/span> by 2 million in the same period, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Developmen<\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
