As you set out for Ithaka<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

hope your road is a long one,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

full of adventure, full of discovery.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Laistrygonians, Cyclops,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

angry Poseidon\u2014don\u2019t be afraid of them:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

you\u2019ll never find things like that on your way<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

as long as a rare excitement<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

stirs your spirit and your body.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Laistrygonians, Cyclops,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

wild Poseidon\u2014you won\u2019t encounter them<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

unless you bring them along inside your soul,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

unless your soul sets them up in front of you.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hope your road is a long one.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

May there be many summer mornings when,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

with what pleasure, what joy,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

you enter harbors you\u2019re seeing for the first time;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

may you stop at Phoenician trading stations<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

to buy fine things,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

sensual perfume of every kind\u2014<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

as many sensual perfumes as you can;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

and may you visit many Egyptian cities<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

to learn and go on learning from their scholars.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Arriving there is what you\u2019re destined for.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But don\u2019t hurry the journey at all.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Better if it lasts for years,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

so you\u2019re old by the time you reach the island,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

wealthy with all you\u2019ve gained on the way,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Without her you wouldn’t have set out.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She has nothing left to give you now.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won\u2019t have fooled you.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

you\u2019ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
